The 2023 GWM Haval Jolion is officially a popular small SUV, having amassed legions of fans thanks to its strong value-for-money proposition. But other Chinese models in the segment are also on the rise, with the best-selling MG ZS recently joined by the ambitious Chery Omoda 5 – so the pressure is on.

It’s no surprise, then, that GWM has taken the opportunity to inject a bit of life into the Jolion line-up with the release of a sporty new variant, the S. Yep, this new family member is aiming to offer a more engaging driving experience with the addition of independent rear suspension and an upgraded 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with 130kW of power (+20kW) and 270Nm of torque (+50Nm).

So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Tom White hops behind the wheel of the new Jolion S to see if the ‘S’ really does stand for ‘sporty. And as he finds out, the small SUV is a lot more fun to drive than most people would give it credit for. But it has some serious flaws on the safety front…
