This is description

A 30-year-old Camel Trophy Discovery, a buried spare tyre for a winch anchor and 400km of Tarkine mud. Jock McDonald and Jesse Gleeson drive Tasmania’s west coast to Cockle Creek.

The second leg of the 4WD 24/7 Camel Trophy tribute — 400km north to south through some of the most remote country in Australia. Out of Waratah and into the Tarkine, on tracks that get rain almost every day of the year and never properly dry out. Shoulder-deep bog holes, rutted climbs that defeat every rig in the convoy, and a log tunnel at the top of a hill nobody manages to drive.

Jock McDonald is in the 30-year-old 300 TDi Discovery on the smallest tyres in the convoy, running Kumho MT51s and loaded to the roof. Jesse Gleeson has the twin-locked GU on 35s, Tank is in the 79 Series carrying every tool the crew owns, and Tom is navigating and doing the mechanical work. Six minutes in, the GU tips off a bank and goes over on its side with the cab filling with muddy water — one more degree and the door’s underneath. From there it’s a night run through ruts deep enough to hang the GU up, a two-pulley-block recovery to stop the 79 tearing its own ladder rack off, and a camp found on the only patch of flat ground for hours.

Day two opens on a winch wall bypass, then an abandoned MQ Patrol rotting in the scrub as a reminder of what this place does to 4WDs. Then the deepest bog hole any of them have driven — a metre and a half, accelerator underwater, the Discovery floating — followed by five bogs back to back and a fallen log a metre round that has to be driven over. Deep in the Tarkine the 79 snaps both front CVs and then both rear axles at once, and Tom pulls the full-floaters apart and rebuilds it on the track. What’s left is hail on the ridge, a clay hill with zero trees to winch off, and an old-school recovery: dig a hole, bury the spare, lay a high-lift jack across it and winch off that. Then Cockle Creek, and the next 4WD south of here would be in Antarctica.
